Expect to sweat as this trio spins the best in Afro-Beat, Ancestral Soul, and more in a musical tribute to "the Motherland". For this amazing event, donations and part of the admission proceeds will be collected for NextAID <http://www.nextaid.org/> . This all takes place at Water Taxi Beach/ South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan New York. The venue is 18,000 square feet of fun, food, sun, recreation and relaxation. This past Friday my man Cosmo Baker and I rocked together at Deity in BK for my monthly Li'l Ricky's BK night there. All I can say is that i truly love spinning with Cosmo, and though we've seen more traffic at the event, the energy in the room was really dope. We were about 50 people away from selling out the room, so to be clear, it was far from dead…we were just looking for that standing room only vibe we had the last time. Regardless, a reat time was had by all, and we look forward to seeing you all again at the end of August…

We want to thank everyone who has supported PROPS, since we moved into LOVE almost 2 months ago now. The party has been incredible so far, and we couldn't have made the move so smoothly without the support of all of you. In an effort to maintain that support and keep you informed, we are making it public that we have decided to discontinue our relationship at LOVE as of this past Wednesday night. Shouts to MeanRed for the facilitations, and shouts to LOVE for giving us a chance to test our little party out over there, but we are moving on. The decision was made by Akalepse and myself, and there was no shady business from LOVE to be clear. Square pegs simply do not fit into round holes more often than not. A weekly party like ours feels like a square peg to LOVE's currently round hole, and we need a proper fit. No more no less, and no hard feelings. Perhaps there is a more fitting linkage for us in the future, but for now it's a wrap.

PROPS will resume play on Wednesday nights at The Galllery Bar at Le Pouisson Rouge starting on May 12th. We will be on pause for the next few weeks regrouping and reintroducing the party. For those who miss the subtle swankiness of APT on wednesdays for the last 9 years, we think you will find this move most satisfying. Music and a small classy room can go a long way together. We're hoping to see you all out rocking with us on our opening night at LPR, which once again will be Wednesday May 12th, 2010.

At the moment, APT is temporarily closed until further notice. I was told there was a chance the venue would reopen tonight, but that has not happened unfortunately. With that, Li’l Ricky’s is postponed tonight. The party is NOT OVER, nor do we plan to ending the night at all, so just stay tuned for more news on that front.

Happy Holidays everyone!

My bad for being a bit slack on these website newsletters for the last couple of weeks. My fellow “parents on tour” know what it is haha... To those without kids, just wait…your perfect correspondence record may suffer, unless you can afford a secretary. Beyond that, I just wanted to say Happy Holidays, and thank you to all the wonderful party people, promoters, venues, artists, DJs, and bar staffs that I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the course of 2009, the final year of the decade. Can you believe that? The craziest decade since the Civil Rights Era is coming to an end! I’m still absorbing that fact, but I am absorbing it with the expectation that 2010 will b a windfall year, full of incredible moments for us all, both collectively on the dancefloor, and in our individual lives. My peoples who have kept up with me over the years know that I am not pacifying you all in saying that I love you dearly for all your support in helping me live out my dream day by day. Here’s to more dreams coming true and more living our lives as we wish in 2010!

This will be my first time seeing my man Eric Colon in over 5 years! I think the night is gonna be an incredible one musically, and we are also having a celebration for my birthday that night! Let's cut to the chase...I was fired suddenly by Santos this past Thursday, November 5th, out of the blue. Turns out that the decision to fire me happened immediately after our "planning" meeting to set up a new guest DJ roster. With that, I get a call from a manager there saying they are moving on with other plans with Q Tip, and "bigger names". QTip says it was their decision. Santos says the decision was forced by QTip. I don't know, but what I do know is that I've been fired, which is...interesting...but, etiquette and respect are expensive these days I guess.

With that, I wanna say thanks, peace and love... to all the patrons, venue staff, security, fellow DJs, performers, dancers, and new friends who showed love and support while I was a part of Open. It was great while it lasted, and my conscience is clear. I showed up to work consistently, and held up my end of the bargain while I was there. Blessings come in strange forms. I look forward to what will come of no longer being involved with Open and Santos. Keep Shining.

It is rare that an artist erupts onto the musical landscape, defines a genre, shakes the world its core and departs too soon leaving a legacy that can fill the night sky. Jazz had John Coltrane. Rock had Jimi Hendrix. Afrobeat had Fela Kuti and on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15th Jump N Funk, Libation, FELA! The Musical, The Museum for African Art & S.O.B.'s pay homage to the life of Nigeria's warrior poet and the Godfather of Global Soul with FELABRATION!

FELABRATION takes its audience through an interactive journey of the life of Africa's most prolific musical pioneer with a documentary, Music is the Weapon, live drummers, special performance by dance virtuosos Afro Mosaic Soul and leading the evening's tribute are DJ Rich Medina, the global ambassador of Jump N Funk and DJ Ian Friday, minister of sound for Libation, ground zero for the Soul Revolution.

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, north of Lagos and received his early education in his homeland. In 1958 Fela's parents sent him to London to go to school for medicine, but he opted to register at Trinity College's School of Music where he studied composition and chose the trumpet as his instrument. Fela became influenced by legendary artists such as Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra and formed the Koola Lobitos in 1961. They soon became a fixture in London's club scene. Two years later, he created
"Afrobeat", which was inspired by James Brown, the Yoruba culture, high life and jazz. Fela reformed the Koola Lobitos to Nigeria 70 and returned to Lagos. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine.

Playing constantly and recording at a ferocious pace, Fela and his band now called Africa 70 became huge stars in West Africa and beyond. His music served as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised, critiquing the military government and made Fela not only a pop star but a political figure as well. People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions. As with any musical icon, his work crossed over musical genres and influenced a multitude of artists. Fela died on August 3, 1997 of complications from AIDS. One million people attended his funeral in Nigeria. His incredible body of work, almost 70 albums, is now available
through public demand all over the world.

FELA! The Musical brings the colorful life of this icon front and center through a provocative hybrid of concert, dance and musical theatre. FELA! features arrangements by Aaron Johnson and Antibalas with direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones.

DJ Rich Medina's renowned Afro-dance party, Jump N Funk, is the world's premier celebration of the life, legacy and music of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Armed with an unparalleled love for Fela and an unrivaled collection of Afrobeat records, Rich Medina re-creates the vibe of a Fela Kuti concert. Jump N Funk has been a staple in venues from New York to Berlin for nearly a decade and has established itself as the only DJ-based party dedicated to Fela Kuti and his message of peace and equality through music.

DJ Ian Friday of Tea Party Music and recording artist Manchildblack are the minister of sound and lyrical minister for the Soul Revolution. Their mission is to bring universal awareness to the Global Soul movement with Libation being its central headquarters. The Museum for African Art is dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of African art and culture. The Museum is recognized worldwide as the pre-eminent organizer of exhibitions and publisher of books devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary African art.

Special guests Afro Mosaic Soul formed in 2005. Creating a dance style known as Mosaic Soul that consists of African dance, Latin dance, tap, modern, popping & locking, break dancing, hip hop, house dance, lofting and capoiera and with movements that carry the fluidity of water, this group has quickly made a name for themselves. They have performed at Melting Pot NYC, S.O.B.s with Haitian artist Errol Josue, House Dance International and with recording artist Fertile Ground. Afrobeat had Fela Kuti and on SATURDAY, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24th - SPREAD LOVE, JUMP N FUNK, HOT ICE, 595 NORTH EVENT VENUE, GIANT STEP and KNITTING FACTORY RECORDS pay homage to the life of Nigeria's warrior poet and the Godfather of Global Soul with FELABRATION!

FELABRATION takes its audience through an interactive journey of the life of Africa's most prolific musical pioneer: first, with a documentary, "Music is the Weapon," live art, traditional African body/pace painting, highlights of the FELA! Broadway Musical, and a special performance by one of Fela's collaborative partners, ROY AYERS!!

Leading the evening's tribute are DJ KEMIT, minister of sound for SPREAD LOVE, and RICH MEDINA, the global ambassador of Jump N Funk. DJ AUSAR, host of WRFG's Kalakuta Show, will open the night with a musical libation befitting a king. Then MAUSIKI SCALES & COMMON GROUND COLLECTIVE will provide the live musical foundation for ROY AYERS and his magical vibes.

DJ KEMIT and RICH MEDINA will close the night with a record-for-record mash up of Afrobeat, Soul, Funk and House- reminiscent Fela's legendary collaborations with JAMES BROWN, ROY AYERS, and GINGER BAKER, just to name a few.

Guests will receive parting gifts (commemorative FELABRATION posters) courtesy of Giant Step and Knitting Factory Records.

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria. In 1961 he formed Koola Lobitos in London, two years later, he created "Afrobeat", which was inspired by James Brown, the Yoruba culture, high life and jazz. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine.

His music served as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised, critiquing the military government and made Fela not only a pop star but a political figure as well. People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions. One million people attended his funeral in Nigeria.

Two years later, he created "Afrobeat", which was inspired by James Brown, the Yoruba culture, high life and jazz. Fela reformed the Koola Lobitos to Nigeria 70 and returned to Lagos. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine.

People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions. As with any musical icon, his work crossed over musical genres and influenced a multitude of artists. Fela died on August 3, 1997 of complications from AIDS. One million people attended his funeral in Nigeria. His incredible body of work, almost 70 albums, is now available through public demand all over the world.

Rich Medina re-creates the vibe of a Fela Kuti concert, utilizing culturally relevant African photography and Nigerian dance videos for visuals and live percussion by Juan Carlos Izaguire and the legendary Leonard “Doc” Gibbs to accompany his turntable mixes, not to mention live performances by some of the world’s most respected Afrobeat leaders, including both of Fela’s sons, Femi and Seun Kuti. Other artists that have collaborated with Rich Medina for past JUMP N’ FUNK parties have been Zap Mama, Sandra Isadore, Akoya, Chicago Afrobeat Project, Wunmi, Ron Trent and many others.

Amazing week last week man…La Melodia ( Amsterdam) cold rocked the spot at Santos 2 Fridays ago, fresh outta customs after a 7 hour flight! Bananas… Li’l Ricky’s at APT the following Wednesday was bangin’! Then Bobbito and I met at Newark Airport to catch a 7am flight to Portland to rock at The Fix. Happy Feet Tour of the west coast was incredible…. Special shouts to Lady Connie, Omega Whatts, Rev Shines, and DJ Kez in Portland. San Francisco came out in full force to 330 Ritch the following night, thanks to the efforts of Hakobo, Marky, Refresco and Massive Selector. LA was also in rare form Saturday at Jimmy’s Lounge, and we gotta thank FroLab and Footlong Development for really wrecking the promotions for us out there. Much love and respect to our entire west coast family! We ended the trip with Sunday night’s introductory Happy Feet Party at Le Pouisson Rouge in NYC, and it was truly beautiful. Thank you Mark Hines, for introducing us to the LPR, and here’s to the birth of a great relationship! We sold MAD CD copies of The Connection LP both on the west coast, and in NYC this past Sunday night, so thanks to everyone who made a purchase! Keep on doin’ what you’re doin’. Real music lives on!

The next three nights in NYC should be out of control! One night of afrobeat, one night of big room happiness, and closing on Saturday with a great one off night in Brooklyn’s finest new venue, Deity! Looking forward to seeing all of you at least once or twice over the next three days. Depending on your taste, we got something for everyone over the next couple of days, so let’s get it!

This past weekend in California was beautiful. First, Spinna and I played at “Nothing But Love” at Mighty in San Fransisco on Saturday night. Happy birthday Hakobo! The party was off the meat rack to say the least! Thanks for having us bro.

Sunday night, I had the pleasure of spinning alongside my man Spinna once again, this time in the lounge room of The Vanguard for the “Deep” 10 Year Anniversary party with Marques Wyatt. Garth Trinidad kicked off the night in our room lovely, followed by me and Spinna. In the main room, it was Marques Wyatt, Louie Vega and Tony Humphries….bananas….Prince chilled upstairs in the lounge with Spinna and I all night! He was dancing and playing air guitar on his cane the entire time….incredible….Rashida, thanks for bringing him by! Marques and Zanne, thank you for allowing me to be part of such a huge event, and here’s to Miami!

Thank you NYC and Philly, for all the love and support you’ve given us over the past 8 months. Open isn’t even a year old yet and we’ve been granted an NYC Nightlife Award, been bumrushed by hungry celebrities, and had some of the best Friday nights NYC has seen in a good long time…so thank you, thank you, thank you, and here’s to plenty more Friday nights together! This past Saturday at The BK Museum’s Target Saturday Series, Spinna and I broke the party attendance record wit our What The Funk party!!! The event was a huge success for us, thanks to our core family who has been following each of us individually for years, as well as since we’ve been together doing What The Funk since this past October at Love.

The beginning of the year is always bugged out to me, because we always run around declaring everything that we claim to stand for, only to end up falling for anything by the next new year. Human nature? Maybe. Lazy, arrogant Americanism? More likely than not. With that, my 2009 general resolution is to stop making bullshit resolutions. No better time than now to stop being full of shit right? i knew you'd agree with me on that.

Just returned home from a great birthday weekend in Holland. First it was the Black Soil Festival in Rotterdam, where we held Jump N Funk for the first time in Holland! Love Afro Life! www.blacksoil.com. One love to all my Amsterdam crew for taking the trip one hour to Rotterdam to get younger with da kid! Special shout to Ty and DJ Spinna for the highlight moments of the festival in my eyes.

Sunday night (The God’s Born day) I got the chance to rock alongside my man DJ Leroy Rey, Phil Horneman, and Rob Manga at Wicked Jazz Sounds at The Sugar Factory. Thanks for the chance to rock fellas, and here’s to the next episode!

Been snoring my brains out since returning from Europe on Monday. Trying to get ready for a huge week in NYC. The road has been my master over the years, as my long time friends well know. I feel truly blessed to travel the world because of poetry, music and the arts. It’s been a long strange trip to date, and last Wednesday night at APT, I got the surprise of my creative life. At about 1:15 AM, Crazy Legs and DJ DP One of The All Mighty Rock Steady Crew came by Little Ricky’s. Not surprising in one sense cause Legs has been my man for well over 13 years now, and me and DP have been cool as hell since our first introduction at last year’s “Yes We Can Can” event in The Bay. The crazy thing about them coming to the party was that they got on the mic to announce…

“ Ladies and gentlemen, Rich Medina is now officially the newest member of ROCK STEADY CREW!”

….maybe you didn’t hear me….what I said was that Crazy Legs officially made me a member of Rock Stead Crew on Wednesday, December 3^rd at APT!

I’m still kinda bugging off of that honestly. I’ve always been made to feel welcome and personally associated with RSC, but to get the Official stamp was really incredible. Thank you Legs, and I can only hope to represent the history and creed of RSC to my best ability. One love and big up all RSC family, known and unknown.

In other news, I got my first two movie royalties last week! I was in “Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins” for those who don’t know. Cop the DVD and check out the alternate scenes. I’m a blur in the actual film, but you can see the original part in the alternate scenes trailer. Thank you Malcolm!

Had a freakin’ blast in Washington DC at Eighteenth St Lounge this past weekend. Damn! Thank you Farid! Special shout to all my DC peoples who came through and showed love! I’m looking forward to party with yall again soon. 6 quick bullet points of info below, and the remaining month’s events as well.

1. Before you go see your family and stuff your faces, come dance with us at APT tonight! Li’l Ricky’s Rib Shack is proud to welcome my man my mellow Cosmo Baker (The Remedy, The Rub) to our house for a guest set!11pm to 4am as usual! We fully appreciate everyone’s patience while the venue finishes dealing with City and Licensing issues. The Meat Packing District is under siege by The City of Ne York and its developer friends at the moment, but I’ve been assured by APT’s owner Alex Petrossian that this too shall pass. The downstairs bar is scheduled tentatively to be restocked either tonight, or the first week in December!

2. After you stuff your faces with your family, come down to Santos Party House Friday night for another installment of “Open” with myself, Q Tip, and Vashtie! Last week was incredible! Grand Puba brought me a disc full of exclusives to rock for the peoples, Showbiz was dancing to “The Party Groove” lovely when I dropped it, and Sadat X and Alamo were hanging out in the booth with me all night, on some real music business. Aside from that personal highlight for me, the dancefloor was going bananas from 11pm til 4am when the lights came up. Thank you NYC for voting for “Open with Rich Medina, Tip and Vashtie” as “Best New NYC Party” at The NYC Nightlife Awards last week!!!

3. Sunday night at Drom in NYC, I rock alongside my man Tony Touch for his weekly house, Latin and classics shinding “The Funk Box.” Tone has been my man for years, and it’s been at least 3 years since we rocked the spot together, so Sunday night should be one for the record books!

4. Philly, on December 6^th, my man George Minnis and Matty The Record Player are starting their new night at Sakeya Restaurant, 1420 Locust St from 10pm to 2am. The cover is 5 beans! Go support one of our own on December 6^th!

Just returned from taking my family to Europe for the 1st time! Dunno if i should be jealous or proud, cause my son got a stamp in his passport before his first birthday! Took me 27 years! I might have a little hate in my veins LOL!
